Сердце то ударяет слишком громко, то будто пропускает шаг. Звуки вокруг уходят куда то вглубь, словно мир отодвигается за толстое стекло. Свет тускнеет не сразу. Сначала просто теряет резкость. Потом лица, стены, потолок, небо, всё знакомое начинает расползаться по краям. Тело ещё здесь, но власть над ним уже не ваша. Пальцы холодеют. В ушах гул. Мыслей становится меньше. И почти каждая из них сводится к одному. Вот и всё. Таким образом, нам кажется, заканчивается любая человеческая история. Без исключений. Так исчезали люди задолго до вас. Так исчезнут люди после вас. Мы можем не знать почти ничего о мире, но в этом уверены почти с животной твёрдостью. Тело изнашивается. Мозг однажды перестаёт держать свет включённым. Сознание гаснет. Конец. И всё же где то в са́мом сердце современной физики есть мысль, которая портит даже эту уверенность. Не утешает. Не обещает рая. Не даёт красивой религиозной лазейки. Она просто спрашивает, а что если собственную смерть вы никогда не сможете пережить. Не потому что станете неуязвимы. Не потому что во Вселенной припасён личный выход именно для вас. А потому что любой опыт вообще возможен только там, где вы ещё существуете, чтобы этот опыт иметь. Это и называют квантовым бессмертием. Сама формулировка звучит как нечто, что должно жить в дешёвой фантастике рядом с бесконечными вселенными, цифровыми душами и разговорами о тайном коде мироздания. Но корни у этой идеи неприятно серьёзные.
